Jeppe Branner, where are you? You have had plenty of time to follow up but I still haven't heard from you again. THIS will be good news for the trolls. Jeppe, I will NOT post on this site again until YOU make an appearance to say SOMETHING. SOMETHING! Or did you just want your website to be a troll-infested rabbit hole? I'll look for your e mail if you don't want to post on your website. Maybe you would prefer that I NOT post anything more on your site. I won't, unless you make it clear that YOU want me to. (I almost signed with my real name) Actually, I am quite proud of my real name and real world scientific success. I thought this would be the best website to work with, but I'll move on the more fertile ground IF WE DON'T HEAR FROM THE WEBSITE OWNER. If you are just going to NEGLECT it, why won't you SELL it? Come on, Jeppe. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- GretaGroupie wrote: |

Otherwise, I'll assume you want things to go back to the way they were. Maybe you are happy with what your website became? If so, don't let me ruin it. You wouldn't have to BAN me. Thank you! You are decent in your behavior, regardless of whether or not we agree. Not to get too technical, but nobody is worried about the pH of the ocean suddenly dropping below 7, or even below 8. The problem is that the ocean's acid neutralizing capacity, also known as alkalinity, is being severely depleted. Most alkalinity in sea water arises from bicarbonate ions, and far smaller concentrations of carbonate ions. This "carbonate system" buffers the sea against pH change, even as alkalinity is depleted. In any case, I'm prepared to completely ignore the hecklers and have rational discussions with decent and respectful people, such as yourself. --------------------------------------------------------------------- duncan61 wrote: |

I find the absorption of CO2 in to the oceans hard to understand.By fair wind and fortune the people I live with came home with a soda stream kit.As per most things Granpa is the only one who regularly uses it.I have 2 bottles and I rotate them. The first thing I noticed is tap filtered water at 16-18 C.Will not accept a charge of CO2 no matter how long you squirt it in.If I chill the water then put it in the freezer on an angle to maximize surface area till Ice forms it takes very little CO2 to make it fizzy.I can visually see small ice crystals form and at first wondered if was stuff in the bottle but no it is small ice crystals.Being more gorilla than human it was an easy test.I ate it.From this can I deduce that in nature cold water accepts more CO2.The oceans around Western Australia never get below 12 C.Yet it is not that far in a straight line to Antartica.Albany faces South and has very different weather to Perth. As ocean currents which I am sure are real move water around is it reasonable to consider that as the water warms it would expel the CO2 back to the atmosphere maintaining an equilibrium.I read and watch a lot of articles and these percentages of absorption by the ocean go from 2%-98% depending on who you believe. If the PH is 8.3 does that not mean its all good.If today it reads 7.9 I will be the first to have panic attacks and go all Guy Fawkes on parliament and make Greta look like the little moaning bitch she is.I can understand how wave action puts CO2 in the ocean is there other ways? |

Well it causes the atmosphere to have its atmospheric pressure at the bottom of the atmosphere ... not increased temperatures ... increased atmospheric pressure. This pressure can be divided into "partial pressures" for the different gases in the atmosphere. I encourage you to take a moment and look up "partial pressures." The atmosphere "pushes" CO2 "into" water with its atmospheric pressure. Like everything else in nature, pressure seeks an equilibrium, and that applies to the partial pressures as well, thus the water will end up with a CO2 content comparable to the atmosphere above it due to the atmosphere's CO2 partial pressure. Don't be afraid to come to me with the hard stuff. |

No complex chemistry about F-, N-, CH4, and S-gases. Maybe I will learn about that chemistry later. Have you ever made a dry ice bomb? It's very simple. Just get a bottle that can be sealed. Put some water in it. Put some dry ice in it, which is frozen CO2. Seal the bottle. Then make sure you get far away from the bottle fast. If you try this, you may want to be outdoors in a wide open field with nobody around. The dry ice will start bubbling up pretty fast. Soon the pressure will become too great, and the bottle will explode. This simple experiment shows the basic problem of why too much CO2 in a sealed container can be dangerous.
