Bill Nye showed a couple of maps on tv. One showed where the percentage of people wearing masks and social distancing was great and and where it was small. The other one showed where the percentage of people with covid was great and where it was small. You guessed it! Where masks were worn the percentage of people getting covid was much smaller. Don't get confused over statistics here. Bill Nye did the statistics. Who do you trust? |

Another thing Bill Nye pointed out about masks was this: even though masks have .3 micron openings, just because a virion can barely sneak past the .3 micron hole there are layers of .3 micron holes and they aren't lined up with each other. In other words if the first layer misses the virion the second or third or fourth layer can capture the virion. Once captured the virion doesn't last very long before it becomes inactive. |

https://www.ajicjournal.org/article/S0196-6553(07)00774-2/pdfFor exposures to infectious respiratory organisms, we are most concerned with the size and concentrations of aerosols generated during normal breathing, talking, coughing, and sneezing. One study found that particles from healthy subjects ranged from 0.09 to 3 mm particles. Concentrations ranged from 100 to 350 particles/L during normal breathing and 150 to 2000 particles/L during talking or coughing.19 Another showed concentrations ranging from 14 to greater than 3000 particles/L and an average particle size of 0.32mm. The filters of most of these surgical masks will allow a large majority of wearer-generated particles to penetrate and will collect only a small percentage of airborne particles generated by infectious patients. Evenwhen equipped with filters demonstrating relatively high collection efficiency, 10% to 40% of particlesFig 1. Penetration (%) of latex spheres. (A) Dental Masks (A-C). ( Hospital masks (D-I).Oberg and Brosseau May 2008 279 will penetrate the face seal as a result of poor fit. For aerosols containing organisms with a low infectiousdose (eg, tuberculosis), this level of face seal leakage would not prevent a potentially infectious exposure during even a brief encounter with a patient generating None of the surgical masks we evaluated met the filter or fit performance criteria for respiratory protection devices. We conclude that surgical masks do not offer protection comparable with that of respiratory protective devices (and are not certified by NIOSH as such) |

Don't forget that most of the virions are contained in droplets. It is the droplets that are stopped by the many molecular layers of the mask. Then the liquid droplets containing the virions begin to evaporate and during this process and also because of time the virions become inactivated. Some do sneak through but the masks do help. Check Bill Nye's maps of mask wearing vs covid infection rates to see the proof in the pudding. Google Bill Nye and Flowing Data Edited on 11-12-2020 19:57 |
