With all the time I've spent wondering about the possible terminal consequences of M2C2 (man-mad climate change), I can't help but ask myself, "If M2C2 were to pose a serious threat to the existence of all life on this planet, should we bother to stop it?" Now as silly a question as this may seem at first glance, on further thought, one must recognize that all beings survive on this planet by killing other living things. If you stop eat something that is, or was, recently alive, after a few days or weeks, you too will die. Is that really the kind of planetary paradigm that's worth saving? Of course, most people will brush this thought aside, claiming how wonderful life is here with the arts and sciences, and all our great accomplishments. But I think if you take a hard look at "everything," you'll soon realize that in the overall balance, there's a lot more suffering going on here than pleasure, a lot more unhappiness than joy, and a lot more failure than success. One of my favorite lines which sums up our situation is, "It takes a lot of poor people to make a rich person," and given how many rich people there are in the world today, there must be far more poor people. Tell me then, what is it that we're really trying to save here anyways, and is it really worth saving?
