Gold fluoride, for example. AuF3. The (Au3+) gold cation is bonded to three (F-) fluoride anions in an ionically bonded chemical compound.
And that is despite the fact that fluoride is NOT a chemical!
Gold bicarbonate, in another example. Au(HCO3)3. The (Au3+) gold cation is bonded to three (HCO3-) bicarbonate anions in an ionically bonded chemical compound.
And that is despite the fact that bicarbonate is NOT a chemical!
Fluorides and bicarbonates are able to have chemical behavior without technically being "chemicals".

Ah thanks for those examples.
Would you still say it is more rare for gold to form bonds with other elements than common?
Gold is certainly CAPABLE of forming bonds to other elements.
But gold tends to stick to itself most of the time.
Most gold atoms in the world are surrounded by other gold atoms, sticking to themselves, segregating themselves from chemical society. Little enclaves of pure gold where they can be with their own kind. But gold is hardly inert.
Gold can be combined with concentrated nitric acid, as is often done, to transform the zero valent metallic gold into trivalent (3+) anions of Au3+
Au + 3HNO3 = Au(NO3)3 + 3/2H2 gold + nitric acid = gold nitrate + hydrogen gas
Solid gold is an insoluble, zero valent metal Gold nitrate is a soluble salt of trivalent gold ion that can be used for electroplating.
Because zero valent metallic gold CAN be oxidized into soluble gold ions, cyanide is often used in gold processing to prevent such oxidation from occurring. |

Yes, Spongy Iris, cyanide is used a LOT in gold mining, ore processing, etc.
Apparently, by fools who "know nothing about gold extraction and purification.."
Gold metal (zero valent) reacts with cyanide ion (CN-) in the presence of oxygen to form the complex anion (cyano auro something) AuCN2(-). This is a dissolved ionic form of gold that can then be transformed into pure gold metal.

If you Google "Zero valent iron" you will see thousands and thousands of references to it, AS IF IT WERE REAL.
Zero valent aluminum, zero valent copper, silver, etc., etc., are REAL. Or many millions of people have been tricked into believing that they are real.
The three main forms of iron found on earth are zero valent iron metal, divalent ferrous iron, and trivalent ferric iron.
This format does not allow me to type a superscript.
But ferric iron, also knows as iron(III), is shown as Fe3+, with the 3+ as a superscript to the upper right. Ferrous iron, also known as iron(II), is shown as Fe2+, with 2+ a superscript on the upper right.
And ZERO VALENT iron, also known as ZVI, is shown as Fe0, (like Fe-zero) with the zero as a superscript to the upper right.
Or we can just declare that zero valent metals don't exist.
Google is not God. Google is not omniscient or infallible.
The Church of False Chemistry has indoctrinated so many millions of followers, they have everybody PRETENDING that zero valent metals are real.
For the truth, you have to go somewhere closer to God than Google.
The omniscient and infallible INTO THE NIGHT knows better than Google or maybe even God.

Spongy Iris, I'm going to put you on the spot with a question.
Of course, you are not obliged to answer if there is any reason you prefer not to share your opinion.
By now, you have had the opportunity to see many posts by both Into the Night and myself/selves discussing questions of chemistry.
QUESTION:
When I post something that directly contradicts some point of chemistry posted by Into the Night, which one of us do you think is more likely to be correct?

QUESTION:
When I post something that directly contradicts some point of chemistry posted by Into the Night, which one of us do you think is more likely to be correct?.
In this thread, for instance, you said gold is a zero valent metal.
And ITN said zero valent is a meaningless buzzword.
So I looked up what zero valent means, and looks like it means a gold atom has 8 electrons around its outer shell.
8 is the maximum I think, and the basic reason gold tends not to bond to many other elements, because it rarely needs the extra electrons.
If I had listened to ITN, I wouldn't have researched that
But now I looked up gold shells and it says electron shells are:
2-8-18-32-18-1
I think that 8 electron thing in the outer shell applies to noble gases.

Thank you for responding to my question.
Yes, a zero valent gold atom really CAN'T take on any more electrons. It certainly doesn't NEED any more electrons for stability.
A trivalent gold ion, Au3+, on the other hand, has three empty spaces in its outer electron orbitals, and a positive electric charge that must be satisfied by close contact with a negatively charged ion. MUCH MORE REACTIVE than zero valent gold. |

Of course, you are not obliged to answer if there is any reason you prefer not to share your opinion.
By now, you have had the opportunity to see many posts by both Into the Night and myself/selves discussing questions of chemistry.
Let me see if I got this right.
Into the Night declared that there is no such thing as zero valent metal.
However, this was not sufficient reason for you to believe that there would be no point in trying to investigate the question on your own, because there was no possibility you would find anything if it doesn't exist.
And rather than finding any reference that confirmed the NON EXISTENCE of zero valent metals, what you found is that this is a genuine scientific term that means something relevant to discussion of gold "molecules".
Based on this case study, it appears that when Into the Night declares that "There is no such thing as...", independent investigation has been know to reveal that, in fact, there IS such thing as...
So, when Into the Night declares, "There is no such thing as climate change."
I chose to believe my own lying eyes on that one. I'm THAT "gullible". |

I don't remember much from high school chemistry. But when a student sees there can be only one electron in the outer shell of a gold atom, I think the assumption is that gold should be very reactive.
A student may then be baffled to find gold is very unreactive.
Here is an answer to that assumption I found.
" First off, gold does react. You can form stable gold alloys and gold compounds. It's just hard, mostly for reasons explained by the other answer
The reason bulk gold solid is largely unreactive is because the electrons in gold fall at energies which few molecules or chemicals match (i.e., due to relativistic effects).
A nice summary of some work by Jens K. Norskov can be found here: http://www.thefreelibrary.com/What+makes+gold+such+a+noble+metal%3F-a017352490"

Chemistry Lesson: The "Parrot limit" of maximum acidity and minimum pH
pH = -log[H+] = negative logarithm of hydrogen ion molarity/normality
The "Parrot limit" declares that "pH cannot be less than or equal to zero"
The "Parrot limit" sets the maximum possible acidity of an acid solution at a molarity/normality of LESS THAN 1.0 N [H+]
Because it is NOT chemically/physically possible for a solution of strong acid to be made to a concentration of 1.0 N [H+] or greater...
It is NOT chemically/physically possible for a solution of strong acid to be measured as having a pH less than or equal to zero.
Scientists are still puzzling over the physical mechanism that prevents any more hydrogen ion from going into solution as concentration approaches 1.0 N [H+]
But something stops the action cold as soon as you get within a hair of pH = 0.
Something prevents any more hydrogen ion from increasing the solution concentration the moment it reaches the 1.0 N [H+] threshold. Pouring in more concentrated acid after that won't get the pH to drop any further and to go ALL THE WAY to zero (or below).
Because the "Parrot limit" says "pH cannot be less than or equal to zero."
No, it's not a "math error" in the formula pH = -log[H+]
The formula is fine. It's just that log[H+] CANNOT EQUAL OR EXCEED ZERO
Not because of math, but something very special happens with the CHEMISTRY at right about 1.0 N [H+], preventing the SOLUTION from ever having [H+] high enough for the MATH to have to calculate pH less than or equal to zero.
It's called the "Parrot limit" and it should get the next Nobel Prize in chemistry.
While the exact mechanisms have yet to be worked out, chemistry will simply NOT ALLOW 1.0 N [H+], or greater, to go into solution.

Buzzword fallacy.
