What does this mean, Robert? Of course every process in reality is real. Are you acknowledging that it is science? Yes or no? Are you denying that this science is science because you must, because you are required to deny science by your WACKY religion? Say it. Say that of course it's real, but that it can't be science because that would go against your religious faith.

Im a BM wrote: but no credible geologist

1. This is a No True Scotsman fallacy; you simply declare those geologists who know so much more than you to be "not credible."
2. You don't get to speak for anyone but yourself anyway.
3. Science doesn't care about the popularity of any misconception
4. You are supposed to be citing science, e.g. Fischer-Tropsh, not hearsay from your fellow cult members about their mistaken religious doctrine.

Im a BM wrote: To make the process work in a laboratory,

Nope. All streamlining refinements are just that, streamlining, and are not required just to make it work. Obviously you are reaching desperately for anti-science propaganda to counter the actual science that kills your WACKY religion dead.

I can see why you don't dare debate me directly. Your religious devotion wouldn't survive more than a few posts.

Im a BM wrote:Yes, there is H2 coming up from deep in the Earth.

It is sufficient for there to be H and C in the earth's crust. Of course, other conditions need to be right, e.g. high temperatures and high pressure (the earth has that in spades), metal catalysts and other conditions, but they are common and hydrocarbons form naturally within the earth.

The earth will not be running out of hydrocarbon-forming potential anytime soon.

Im a BM wrote: What happens in real life, deep underground, under the sea, in some wetland conditions and in cow guts is to combine CARBON DIOXIDE with hydrogen to make methane.

This is the standard pivot away from the untenable position that your WACKY religion holds, i.e. of dead things rotting/decaying into hydrocarbons, and shifting to the production of methane by living things.

Dial it back. Explain how dead things rot into hydrocarbons. This should be good.

Im a BM wrote: It is quite another to negate the existence of actual fossil fuel

No one needs to negate that which does not exist. Show me either:
1. fossils that are used as fuel
2. fossils that somehow use fuel

Your religion is stupid.

With only generic reference to "H and C in the Earth's crust", I feel compelled to remind everyone that the Fischer-Tropsch process only works with SPECIFIC chemical forms of the elements H and C. The "hydrogen" must be diatomic, dihydrogen H2. The "carbon" MUST be in the inorganic as CARBON MONOXIDE or CO. Those are the two raw materials, supplied in pure form and without interference from ANY other gases that are used for Fischer-Tropsch.

There is no doubt that dihydrogen, H2 gas is emitted in the Earth's crust. Carbon monoxide, CO does occur, but actually pretty rarely. A microsite in the Earth's crust where a stream of pure H2 combines with a stream of pure carbon MONOXIDE, CO would be even more rare, if not virtually impossible.

But Fishcher-Tropsch is chemically dependent on a cobalt-platinum catalyst. It is not enough to bring two streams of purified gases into contact, with no other gases present to interfere. They won't react spontaneously to make hydrocarbon. It's not even enough to subject it to very high temperature and pressure. In the absence of a rare catalyst, the reaction don't proceed. It wouldn't be enough for a microsite of the cobalt somewhere in the crust and a microsite of pure platinum somewhere else. The two elements would have to be in intimate contact to work as an effective catalyst for Fischer-Tropsch.

What other catalysts do we reasonably expect to find down there, where the pure dihydrogen H2 makes contact with some PURE CARBON MONOXIDE.

Perhaps even more than the difficulty of postulating a plausible available catalyst to substitute for that rare cobalt-platinum combo we use in the lab somehow being available deep in the crust... The dependence on CARBON MONOXIDE. Where, oh where are you gonna find some PURE carbon monoxide forming under deep crust conditions. And a pathway from that mystery source of carbon MONOXIDE to where it can make contact with pure hydrogen, and nothing else. It would be a lot more plausible if Fischer-Tropsch ran on CO2, not CO, plus H2.

You still would never find the equivalent of a cobalt-platinum catalyst. But IF the raw material were CO2, deep crust Fischer-Tropsch is ALMOST plausible.

Pray tell, oh worshipper of magic petroleum.

All chemical processes work with specific chemical forms.

I feel compelled to mention that you still haven't demonstrated any living thing rotting/decaying into a higher energy form. You still haven't demonstrated a single violation of the 2nd law of thermodynamics, per your religious dogma.

I'm not the only one waiting for you to start supporting your faith.

There is only one form of hydrogen.
Carbon can appear in several forms, but all the common forms will work.
Im a BM wrote:

Nope. It doesn't. It usually is, though.

Carbon is not inorganic.
Carbon is not carbon monoxide.
Either carbon, carbon monoxide, or carbon dioxide will work.

Irrelevance fallacy.

The process does not require cobalt or platinum at all.
The catalyst is iron. All you need after that is heat and pressure.

CO not required. H2 not required.

You are trying to desperately deny the Fischer-Tropsche process.
It does not depend on carbon monoxide.
It does not depend on 'pure hydrogen'.
It does not depend on cobalt.
It does not depend on platinum.

It does not depend on platinum.
