I saw this interesting press release from the UN Environment Program discussing strategies to build better cities: http://bit.ly/2EUw8BB

I thought the article does a great job of laying out the challenges facing urbanization in the context of climate change, as well as providing some concrete ideas on how to achieve "low-carbon, resource-efficient, socially just cities."

Among a number of ideas, the article recommends compact growth, better connections, liveable neighborhoods and infrastructure for cross-sector efficiency.

I think it provides a good framework for what practical steps we can be taken at a city-level scale, but I welcome your opinions on it as well.

As a follow-up to the last article I posted, I thought I would share this as well: http://bit.ly/2EKEcpu. This article from The Guardian by Tom White looks at a study that highlights the potential environmental damage caused to cities by climate change. Unlike the previous article, it takes a more in-depth approach to the short- and medium-term consequences of climate change on our cities by examining various scenarios. It is a compelling piece of reporting that highlights the urgent need to rethink how we plan our cities.

It is also important to consider what are objectives are when we discuss sustainability. This Vox piece by Brad Plumer (http://bit.ly/2CBwZ51) has an interesting take on the well-tread idea that we need to minimize temperature rises to below 2 degrees Celsius. Plumer argues that there is little chance we will meet that goal. He considers the murky origins of the 2-degree marker and discusses what it means for temperatures to rise beyond that mark.
