Coastal wetlands aren't drained for agriculture. They are swamps. There is nowhere for water to drain to (except a slow flow to the sea, eventually).
If you remove the vegetation from a swamp, it will return in just a few years. That's why it's not used for agriculture. It's too wet and too useless to plant anything (a few have tried rice, but with limited success).
One other swamp crop is balsa wood. This stuff can be 'farmed', and it's light enough you can almost just haul off with a whole tree like Paul Bunyan.
The amount of sulfur that actually becomes sulfuric acid is really very tiny. It can be a LOT more and still not make any significant change in the pH of oceans. You are ignoring a concept in chemistry called 'buffering'. You should probably spend more time learning the chemistry of acid-base reactions.

And now I know that "the pH won't budge at all" if I add a drop of concentrated acid to a liter of sea water.
That ALONE is PROOF that ocean acidification is physically impossible.
Heck, you can't even acidify PURE water, according to the local "chemist".

Rather than produce the acidifying "carbonic acid gas" known as carbon dioxide, these anaerobic processes generate CARBONATE ION, with acid neutralizing capacity.
So, pure water in equilibrium with atmospheric CO2 at 420 ppm reaches an equilibrium pH of about 5.6. At least 300 times more "acidic" than sea water.
Because sea water has a constant input of exogenous carbonate anions, it maintains pH ABOVE 7, despite the carbonic acid input from the sky.
Acidifying the sea to below pH 7, as IBdaMann suggests would enable "life to thrive as never before", would not have any discernable corrosive impact or other direct pH effects. But it would bring the concentration of carbonate ion in solution to virtually zero. Only a handful of marine organisms can make calcium carbonate shell unless carbonate ion is readily available in solution.
It would be easy enough to bring a sea water aquarium down to pH 7 and observe which organisms "thrive as never before".

The "science" of what is NOT. Into the Night needs to write the textbook. But since "science is not a textbook"... Just MAKE SHIT UP as needed.
As a college chemistry instructor, I was required to say more than "is not" when correcting mistaken comments. I had to tell them what IS the correct information.
If they wrote out an incorrect "reaction", I would show them the formula for the correct one. If they made a "math error" in a calculation, I would show them where it was and how to calculate it correctly. If they used a chemistry term incorrectly, I would show them the correct use of the term.
"Incorrect... Incorrect... is not... is not... incorrect reaction... is not... is not... is not... is not... You still don't even know what pH is... is not... is not ... The pKa of this reaction is approximately 10.3 If the sea had pH of 10.3, there would be an exact 50:50 split with the concentration of bicarbonate ions being equal to carbonate ions. For contrast, the 3rd equilibrium is between carbonic acid and bicarbonate ion, H2CO3 = H+ + HCO3-. This pH-dependent equilibria has pKa approximately 6.3. If the sea had pH = 6.3, there would be an exact 50:50 split between carbonic acid and bicarbonate ions, at equal concentration.
But the 5th equilibrium is not pH dependent.
CO3(2-) + (Ca++ or Mg++) = CaCO3 or MgCO3, as solid precipitates.
Physical parameters influence this last equilibrium as much as pH does. Temperature and pressure come into play, creating some microsites in the sea where the "carbonate saturation state" causes precipitation of CaCO3 or MgCO3 out of solution, and others where it causes solid CaCO3 or MgCO3 particles suspended in solution to dissolve. |

"SGD" stands for submarine groundwater discharge. While this good article's abstract makes no mention of ALKALINITY (it is about nutrients) it IS a great review about the importance of submarine groundwater discharge.
I LOVE the fact that they actually measured DISSOLVED ORGANIC NITROGEN in the SGD samples. I take some pride in that one. Water chemists used to ignore the fact that a lot of nitrogen in aquatic ecosystems is NOT in inorganic (mineral) form as ammonium, nitrate, or nitrite. In blackwater rivers and soil waters of tannin-rich ecosystems, MOST of the nitrogen is found as dissolved organic nitrogen, rather than ammonium or nitrate.
It would have been nice if the article ALSO discussed the importance of submarine groundwater discharge for supplying ALKALINITY (as carbonate and bicarbonate ions) to the sea. If the sea were made of pure water in equilibrium with an atmosphere with >420 ppm CO2, the pH of the sea would be 5.6, due to the formation of carbonic acid. SGD may be the single greatest source of new carbonate ions entering the sea to maintain pH above 8.0
For comic relief, one might read the BIZZARE interpretation offered by IBdaMann, sniffing out conspiracies to get funding greater government control.

It turns out that IBdaMann taught ME that pH can go below zero. He used math and everything!
"pH = -ln(H+)" said IBdaMann. That meant that the 1.5 M nitric acid solution really DID have pH below zero.
But that was long after he insisted that an acid would have to be "magical" to have pH = 0.0, and that pure water was MORE BUFFERED than sea water to resist pH change upon addition of a drop of acid.
Since he never actually studied chemistry or used "pH" in any math applications, he didn't realize that the logarithm was BASE TEN. pH = -log(H+).
But every step of the way, when IBdaMann realized he was just wrong, he pretended that the CORRECT position had actually been his all along and HE was the one who taught it to YOU.
"So, Mr. Chemistry Genius.." (the line IBdaMann used to address me), what did you teach Robert Wagner about "buffering"?
Did you tell him about the "exponential change to basicity", the "delta(solution)" equation where the "magnitude of effect" could be calculated, and how "change to the acid" accounts for why you said pure water was so much better buffered than sea water against pH change?
Well pure water does "buffer" the acid by DILUTION, and as IBdaMann explains, the sea is "limitless" in its capacity to mitigate pollution with infinite dilution. Besides, all the carbonic acid in sea water just "evaporates", right?

But they sure have a LOT to say as experts in science, and they just never seem to stop trolling.
