Plastic cards are cheap to make, most of the security issues have been dealt with. The main vulnerability will be the same, it's the people using them, and accepting payment. The cheap plastic cards can last for years, most often replaced, do to data breaches, or suspicious activity. Your higher tech solutions will need batteries replaced, won't last years. More parts, more points of failure. Those small electronic parts are easily damaged. Magnetism is killer on RFID chips. Humans will always be the weakest point, in any security system. The have to actually us it, and use it correctly. Where I work, passwords need to be changed every 3 months, and you can't use any previous password. Most people write them down some place handy, since by the time they get use to it, they have to change it again. Lot of people do the same for their cards, since most carry more than one. It's smart to carry multiple cards, since one or more can fail, or be locked by the credit provider or bank, due to suspicious activity or suspected data breach. How are you going to make payments, if your only card or device isn't working? You are stuck with a bill, and no way to pay for goods or services, you already made use of. Your account number is on your plastic card, if it doesn't scan, it still can get billed. If rejected, there is a phone number that can be called to work something out, or determine the reason. A smart device as you described, leaves you with no alternatives, other than an apology, and beg forgiveness. Most people are going to want the money they are owed. |

Let's be honest, even companies are starting to stop the use of plastic cards, especially with the climate change crisis going on and they are simply a hassle to carry around. Paper money and coins will be obsolete in a few years, My favorite are these: they are simply a hassle to carry around. strangely followed by There are two cards that we have discovered that can replace the plastic card Does anyone else see the problem here? Of course, the author should have opened with this one: ... what we think will take over both the plastic cards and those mentioned above when it is safer and more developed is the skin integrated NFC chip.
