But they were sod busting farmers as well in the flatter land. The film strip showed how they grew corn. They would use the parts of the fish they didn't eat as fertilizer. The film strip showed the Native American women planting a salmon fish head along with the kernels of corn.

Swan, I don't know what makes you think that buried, rotting flesh doesn't make excellent fertilizer. No, you don't have to first allow the body to rot up above the soil surface.

Human bodies are often buried in sealed, oxygen-proof containers, with the flesh filled with formaldehyde or other preservatives. So, Swan is right that they don't provide a lot of fertilizer. But those salmon heads the Native Americans buried along with the corn kernels didn't need to be composted above the surface before use as fertilizer. They were planted in the aerobic zone of the top soil, so plenty of oxygen was available for rapid rotting. In a matter of weeks, those fish heads were already decomposed enough to start feeding the corn.
