When there is so much debate about CO2, it is because CO2 does not create the greenhouse effect. It is only solid substances like glass, which can capture radiation, and any gases. The only type of glass in the atmosphere are the high-altitude ice clouds created by cosmic radiation. These clouds consist of dry ice and water ice. My question is: Will more CO2 in the atmosphere together with cosmic rays produce more dry ice, which acts warming. |

@The Humidity - most respected authorities today agree that CO2 does contribute to the GHG effect. However, if you factor in Global Warming Potential, CO2's overall importance comes into question. For better understanding, please read the following posts: http://www.climate-debate.com/forum/is-co2-nothing-more-than-a-m2c2-companion-ghg-d24-e776.php#post_4022 http://www.climate-debate.com/forum/is-co2-nothing-more-than-a-m2c2-companion-ghg-d24-e776.php#post_4039 http://www.climate-debate.com/forum/is-co2-nothing-more-than-a-m2c2-companion-ghg-d24-e776.php#post_4045 The 2015 M2C2 (Global 9/11) Denialist Troll Awards 1st Place - Jep Branner - Our Stupid Administrator! 2nd Place - IBdaMann - Science IS cherry picking! 3rd Place - Into the Night - Mr. Nonsense numbers! 4th Place - Tim the plumber - The Drivel Queen! |

The Humidity wrote: The 'greenhouse' effect doesn't actually work like a greenhouse. It was poorly named in the 19th century, but the name stuck. Here, this chapter on the history of the science of the 'greenhouse' effect on the American Institute of Physics website might help you understand: https://www.aip.org/history/climate/co2.htm from: The Discovery of Global Warming - Professor Spencer Weart Harvard University Press http://www.hup.harvard.edu/catalog.php?isbn=9780674031890 Edited on 01-11-2015 08:44 |

@Ceist - the phrase "greenhouse effect" doesn't reflect the complex mechanics which underlie the process of AGW, but I think for an initial characterization which was made very early in the process when so little was known (at least compared to today) that the phrase has served well in helping many people, especially those who are not well versed in science, to get a basic grasp on the topic of AGW. I'd almost analogize it to the children's song "The wheels on the bus go round and round!" True, they do, though that doesn't say much about how or why they go round and round. But for a beginner, it's a good place to start.
