'We will get you home': Biden vows to Americans in Kabul amid growing criticism

President Joe Biden is pledging to Americans still trapped in Afghanistan: "We will get you home."

Biden also said Friday the United States is committed to evacuating all Afghans who assisted the war effort _ a potentially vast expansion of the administration's commitments on the airlift so far, given the tens of thousands of Afghan translators and others, and their close family members, seeking evacuation.

Biden's comments at a White House news conference Friday come as the U.S. government struggles to ramp up a massive airlift clearing Americans and other foreigners and vulnerable Afghans through the Kabul airport, rescuing them from a Taliban takeover of the country.

Biden is facing criticism for a chaotic and often violent scene outside the airport and crowds struggle to reach safety inside.

Evacuation flights at the Kabul airport had stopped for several hours on Friday because of a backup at a transit point for the refugees, a U.S. airbase in Qatar, U.S. officials said. However, flights resumed in the afternoon.

Tens of thousands of people remain to be evacuated ahead of the United States' Aug. 31 deadline to withdraw its troops from the country, although the pace had picked up overnight. A defense official said about 5,700 people, including about 250 Americans, were flown out of Kabul aboard 16 C-17 transport planes. On each of the previous two days, about 2,000 people were airlifted.

With desperate crowds thronging Kabul's airport, and Taliban fighters ringing its perimeter, the U.S. government renewed its advisory to Americans and others that it could not guarantee safe passage for any of those desperately seeking seats on the planes inside.

Joe has got some explaining to do... Afghanistan has fallen, and still thousand left behind? The airport, is all that's left, and who knows how many didn't quite make it. This is going to cost Joe, big time. Any Americans who were captured, will of course be ransomed, or murdered. As well as any from other countries. Afghans attempting to flee, executed.

Why didn't Joe beef up the troops, and have a safe, secure withdraw. Taliban respect lots of guns, ammunition, airstrikes. Joe just handed them status. Not only did the Taliban get their country back, but the made us run for our lives, as we exited.

If Joe was smart, he'd blast the hell out of the Taliban, while their are out in the open. Show them we still got testicles, and don't appreciate the escort out.

Why would Joe do anything? He's not capable of doing anything. Queen Pelosi and Obama are the real power.

Obama released the leader of the Taliban that took this city. He WAS in Guantanamo.

Joe owns full responsibility, since he 'won' the election. He's the one who signed of on pulling out, and the plan to do it quickly, 'safely'. Really can't believe the military was to pleased with the plan, since there are still thousands to be evacuated, and basically, the only hold control over that one airport. Those that didn't make it in, are pretty well screwed. Really don't understand why we just didn't chase the Taliban back into their rat-holes, when they cam out in mass, to start taking cities. Even a few drone strikes would have sent them running. Don't know why Joe would take the Taliban's word on anything. The evacuation should have been with full military force, to make sure everybody got out. Looks like Joe just set a date, sent out a memo, and left everyone to get to a plane, when convenient. We went in with military force, and there was never a question, that we would be leaving the same way.

Thousands of dead and trillions of dollars spent for zero results. Just another scam to transfer money into somebody s pocket.
