'This is huge': Locust swarms in Africa are worst in decades

KATITIKA, Kenya — (AP) — The hum of millions of locusts on the move is broken by the screams of farmers and the clanging of pots and pans. But their noise-making does little to stop the voracious insects from feasting on their crops in this rural community.
The worst outbreak of desert locusts in Kenya in 70 years has seen hundreds of millions of the bugs swarm into the East African nation from Somalia and Ethiopia. Those two countries have not had an infestation like this in a quarter-century, destroying farmland and threatening an already vulnerable region with devastating hunger.
"Even cows are wondering what is happening," said Ndunda Makanga, who spent hours Friday trying to chase the locusts from his farm. "Corn, sorghum, cowpeas, they have eaten everything."

The locus will be bad enough, but it's only the start. The locus will provide a feast for other pests, little more resistant to the tons of pesticides being dumped, indiscriminately, to combat the deadly swarms. Of course the pesticides kill all bugs, so the beneficial ones, that pollinate what crops survive, won't be productive either. Those chemicals will be in the fresh water, and any other food produced in the area as well. Not immediately fatal, but will have longer term effects. Fix one problem, by creating a more serious one. Wonder if Obama, or some other democrat is financing this cure. To bad Kenya didn't invest in windmills. Might not produce much energy, but bet they could be killing off a lot of locus.

What surprises me, is that they have the swarms, pretty much every year, and do some damage. Some years are worse than others, remember seeing similar headlines several times over the past several decades, always of biblical proportions. Now, if they have an ongoing locus problem, why have they never developed a commonsense plan to combat them, or reduce the damage? They know they are coming, every year, and they know they can come in devastating numbers, at any time. They always wait, until the locus arrive, before fighting them, and suffer for years after.

I don't believe climate change has anything to do with locus swarms, since they have been happening throughout recorded history, long before the fossil fuel burning got started. It's in the bible, several times, and not just in Revelations either.
