Not the decision to run again for a second term. That was already a lost cause when the Paris Peace talks failed to make any progress. He had to decide what to do about that damn Richard Nixon. In one of the phone call recordings he deliberately recorded for the archives, Johnson discusses the Nixon problem. Johnson had already announced that he wasn't running again, and Nixon was not yet the presidential nominee of the Republican. Johnson knew that Richard Nixon had committed treason, literally. Well, maybe not literally, because the US never officially declared "war" in Viet Nam. Johnson had the smoking gun intelligence that Nixon sent an envoy to meet with South Vietnam's president Thieu. Thieu was convinced to sabotage the peace talks in 1968, because he could get a much better deal for himself if he waited until Nixon was president in 1969. More than 20,000 additional Americans died in Vietnam after 1968, the year when the Peace Talks could have brought the war to an end with a less complete Communist victory than was achieved after Nixon pulled out in 1973. In the phone call with Johnson, the other person is insisting that this needed to be exposed. It looked like Nixon had a good shot at getting the nomination. I'll have to look up the transcripts, but I remember the sound of LBJ's voice as he sighed and explained that he really just couldn't do that. As much as he hated Nixon and hated what might happen, he thought that with all the political division and unrest it would risk more harm than good to expose Nixon's crime. It is easy to speculate all the reasons LBJ might have had for letting Nixon off the hook and keeping his treason a secret from the American people. Probably had something to do with the JFK assassination, right? Those hippies really hated Nixon too. I'm sure they would have loved some kind of meme type thing of Nixon's arrest, prosecution, and execution.
