The First Law states that the change in internal energy of a system equals heat added to the system minus work done by the system: ΔU = Q - W. Your formulation omits the heat input term entirely. When I joined four years ago, Google still displayed climate-debate.com high on the first page of results for inquiries about "climate change discussion sites" or related search terms. At that time, a new member joined every couple of days.
If you go to the "Users (1745)" list near the upper left, you'll see that MOST of those 1745 members have ZERO posts. They signed up, but decided not to actually join the discussion. The next most prominent number displayed after "0" is "1". Of the new members who actually DID post, the overwhelming majority posted only ONCE. I think you can understand why.
Well, YOU are the first new member to post anything related to climate change in nearly TWO years now. People simply stopped joining after Google stopped displaying climate-debate.com prominently, as if it were a discussion site where one might find rational discourse related to climate change.
Therefore my question, how did YOU ever find this website?
And if this IS your "farewell" (you lasted longer than MOST new members!) I am giving you my email address in a PM in the hope that we continue to communicate in the future.

When I joined, they had half a dozen on the team waiting in ambush.
A couple of them openly complained at IBdaMann that he was going to drive me away before anyone else had a chance to get in on the gang rape. "Define your terms!" came at me from all directions. Apparently, there is some rule in "science" that you cannot use the term "climate change" until you provide an "unambiguous definition" that did "not violate" an extremely distorted interpretation of "thermodynamics".
NOBODY EVER PASSED THE TEST!
But when Google stopped directly fresh prey to blindly stumble into an ambush, the "Define your terms" gang had little to do but circle jerks. Praising each other for being the only ones in the world who truly understand "science". The fun didn't last long as it became more apparent that nobody new was going to join anymore. None of the previous members stuck around, and no new ones were arriving for the insult fest.

You remind me that coastal wetlands are rarely viewed as carbonate fountains, but certainly recognized as an ENORMOUS reservoir of buried organic carbon.
Upon drainage for agriculture, waterlogged, organic-carbon-rich sediment is exposed to oxygen and aerobic decomposition. CO2 emissions from soil to atmosphere increase by 50x, literally. Previously, they were accumulating more stored organic carbon every year, with net atmospheric sequestration of CO2.
So, wetland management gets attention because we need to manage that carbon reservoir carefully. Drainage of Indonesian peatlands for oil palm plantations may provide some "biofuel" (HOORAY for reduced fossil fuel use!), but it is outweighed orders of magnitude by the CO2 emissions it provokes.
But those Indonesian peatlands also supply carbonate ion alkalinity and photosynthesis fertilizer nutrient elements to some important coral reefs.
Draining the peatlands for oil palm plantations transformed them from exporters of carbonate ion alkalinity in submarine groundwater discharge into exporters of sulfuric acid drained from plantations and pumped up to be discharged into surface water.
Oxygen didn't just become available to aerobic bacteria, fungi, and detritivores to turn peatland soil organic carbon into carbon dioxide. Oxygen made it possible for sulfur oxidizing bacteria to transform iron pyrite into sulfuric acid. Drained peatlands form "acid sulfate soils" from all the sulfuric acid generated.
In order to drain the peatland, sub sea level ditches are constructed and CONSTANTLY pumped to keep the water table below sea level. Groundwater flows that would have provided sulfate for microbial sulfate reduction in subsoil are diverted, pumped out to surface water with a load of new sulfuric acid. Submarine groundwater discharge flows are diminished, and their carbonate ion content diminished.
Instead of making new iron pyrite and new carbonate ions via sulfate reduction, and increasing new soil organic matter content, old iron pyrite gets oxidized to sulfuric acid and old organic matter gets oxidized to carbon dioxide. A double whammy for climate change and ocean acidification.
On the other hand, a lot of those Indonesian peatlands already went below sea level centuries ago, and the enormous reservoir of organic carbon now resides under shallow sea water. This can be tapped for carbonate ion generation.
Just a simple wind turbine or sea-wave-powered pump mounted above the very shallow sea floor, and a simple tube well drilled down a few meters into the sea floor sediment to encounter a nice thick permeable peat layer. Just pump sea water down into that tube well and carbonate ions will flow out further offshore, at the seeps where submarine groundwater discharge entered the sea when the peatland was still above sea level. Whereas sea water just has part per million oxygen dissolved in it, it has nearly three grams per liter sulfate in it. One gallon of sea water can oxidize a significant amount of organic carbon, via sulfate reducing bacteria. And that oxidized carbon won't be CO2, it will be carbonate ions going directly where they are most needed. Along with some ammonia, organic nitrogen, and phosphorus to fertilize the reefs. Did I forget to mention that this is where the sea gets a lot of bioavailable IRON? Organically complexed by chelating agents, both ferrous and ferric iron are released to the sea in a form that remains soluble and bioavailable for a long time. Not like most iron that lands in the sea, with a short half life before oxidation/precipitation |

So yes, the system is dynamic. Absolutely. But "dynamic" and "CO2-driven" aren't in tension--the dynamics are downstream of the forcing. Complexity here is an amplifier of concern, not a reason for pause.

The amplification is weaker there, which isn't quite the same as saying the effect is absent or only indirect. What I am really interested in is why the influence of increased CO2 warms up the North Polar region so much more than anywhere else.

I'm pretty sure you will not be able to find any climate data showing land temperatures in the tropics have warmed significantly beyond any reasonable margin of error.
I don't agree with ITN's and IBDM's conclusions that there is no global warming. But their most basic principle, that cold air cannot heat up warm land, makes sense. It is one of those immutable laws of physics, or thermodynamics.
So the dynamic which causes global warming from increasing CO2 must be different than what most people believe, ya think?

Of course, albedo IS a term that is used in science. A quantifiable parameter.
Knowing the right number for albedo, you can plug it into equations to tell you how much warmer you get out in the sun with a white tee shirt versus a black one. Albedo tells you how much visible light gets reflected, versus absorbed and turned into HEAT. Global dimming cannot be quantified in any useful way without someone who knows what albedo is using those albedo numbers in the calculations.
To his credit, he didn't simply insist that "There is no such thing as 'albedo'". There IS such thing, it's just not a term that is used in science.

Fun fact, according to ALBEDO, it should be cooler standing on the light grey ash where they just burned down a forest, compared to when lower albedo forest canopy covered the site. More visible light is getting turned into heat by dark green forest leaves compared to light colored ash, so it should be hotter. But evapotranspiration was providing AC while the trees were alive. Evaporative cooling as water consumes energy to change phase from liquid to vapor. And there is at least an order of magnitude more damp surface area exposed to evaporation in a square meter of live leaves, compared to a square meter of open water, or a square meter of dry ashes. It was ten or twenty degrees cooler when the low albedo canopy was absorbing more visible light to make heat. Evaporative cooling doesn't get enough attention is such discussions.

Sealover, Hi. Look, I'm a writer who dabbles in science. It wouldn't be fair to bona fide scientists to call myself a scientist. A hobbyist? I'll accept that. I have a stack of books, access to the internet, and a curiosity that keeps me digging.
How much do I actually know? I leave that for others to judge. Let the words be the credential. Most of us are anonymous here anyway, and in that respect we're all equal. Either our arguments are factual, supported, and capable of surviving scrutiny, or they aren't.
In a sense, that's one reason I post on these forums: to find out.
What I have learned over the years is that knowledge alone isn't enough. You also have to understand your audience--what they know, what they don't know, and how to bridge the gap. I've gotten better at that with time. My strongest subject in college was nonfiction writing, and that skill has served me well.
My primary competence is in the political arena, as my OP suggests. I would never presume to write a science textbook. Self-education can take you a long way, but I'm sure there are gaps--perhaps significant ones--where a formal scientific education would have done a better job than independent study.
So I'll happily accept "writer." The rest, I'll leave to the readers.

I fear that this post got lost in the shuffle, and there is new material for Patricio at the bottom.
The first draft of the first paper I authored for submission to a peer-reviewed scientific journal had EXCESSIVE citations. My major professor reviewed it for me and laughed at how many references I had included to cite a source for every assertion. First he pointed out the instances where my citation was a basic introductory textbook widely used for some field of science. His rule of thumb was that if it was already in the textbooks there was no need to cite a source. Everybody already knew where to find the reference at that point. Then he pointed out how many places I cited a source more than 20 years old. More than half of them were unnecessary citations. The finding was already well enough established to be getting into the textbooks and everybody already knew where to find it. I'm sure that the local "resident experts in science" know more than I do about the rules for defining one's terms with citable sources.
I did not need to define any terms that were not new, unless they were perhaps too obscure to be well known. The first sentence of my most famous paper was, "The importance of dissolved organic nitrogen in ecosystem nutrient fluxes and plant nutrition is only beginning to be appreciated." For a highly prestigious journal such as Nature, none of the terms in that sentence needed to be defined.
Here at climate-debate.com, I continue to be told that "there is no such thing as 'organic nitrogen'". No matter how many ways I describe or define it, they simply continue to declare that it does not even exist. Citations are not helpful.
In general I don't bother writing a citation for posts at climate-debate.com The main exception is the "Maximizing Carbon Sequestration.." thread, where I continue to update with references to recent papers on the topic.

Previously, they were accumulating more stored organic carbon every year, with net atmospheric sequestration of CO2.
So, wetland management gets attention because we need to manage that carbon reservoir carefully. Drainage of Indonesian peatlands for oil palm plantations may provide some "biofuel" (HOORAY for reduced fossil fuel use!), but it is outweighed orders of magnitude by the CO2 emissions it provokes.
But those Indonesian peatlands also supply carbonate ion alkalinity and photosynthesis fertilizer nutrient elements to some important coral reefs.
Draining the peatlands for oil palm plantations transformed them from exporters of carbonate ion alkalinity in submarine groundwater discharge into exporters of sulfuric acid drained from plantations and pumped up to be discharged into surface water.
Oxygen didn't just become available to aerobic bacteria, fungi, and detritivores to turn peatland soil organic carbon into carbon dioxide. Oxygen made it possible for sulfur oxidizing bacteria to transform iron pyrite into sulfuric acid. Drained peatlands form "acid sulfate soils" from all the sulfuric acid generated.
In order to drain the peatland, sub sea level ditches are constructed and CONSTANTLY pumped to keep the water table below sea level. Groundwater flows that would have provided sulfate for microbial sulfate reduction in subsoil are diverted, pumped out to surface water with a load of new sulfuric acid. Submarine groundwater discharge flows are diminished, and their carbonate ion content diminished.
Instead of making new iron pyrite and new carbonate ions via sulfate reduction, and increasing new soil organic matter content, old iron pyrite gets oxidized to sulfuric acid and old organic matter gets oxidized to carbon dioxide. A double whammy for climate change and ocean acidification.
On the other hand, a lot of those Indonesian peatlands already went below sea level centuries ago, and the enormous reservoir of organic carbon now resides under shallow sea water. This can be tapped for carbonate ion generation.
Just a simple wind turbine or sea-wave-powered pump mounted above the very shallow sea floor, and a simple tube well drilled down a few meters into the sea floor sediment to encounter a nice thick permeable peat layer. Just pump sea water down into that tube well and carbonate ions will flow out further offshore, at the seeps where submarine groundwater discharge entered the sea when the peatland was still above sea level. Whereas sea water just has part per million oxygen dissolved in it, it has nearly three grams per liter sulfate in it. One gallon of sea water can oxidize a significant amount of organic carbon, via sulfate reducing bacteria. And that oxidized carbon won't be CO2, it will be carbonate ions going directly where they are most needed. Along with some ammonia, organic nitrogen, and phosphorus to fertilize the reefs. Did I forget to mention that this is where the sea gets a lot of bioavailable IRON? Organically complexed by chelating agents, both ferrous and ferric iron are released to the sea in a form that remains soluble and bioavailable for a long time. Not like most iron that lands in the sea, with a short half life before oxidation/precipitation

I get the impression that Patricio is far more intelligent, and very OBVIOUSLY more well-versed in science than you are. He says he has no science degrees, but I find it hard to believe he didn't sit in some classroom where a professor taught at least SOME of what he posts.
