The new tactic from climate change deniers is to admit that "I'm not a scientist, but..." and then to proceed to give an opinion on the science. The percentages of scientists who say that climate change is real, and that humans are causing it, is the same as those who say that cigarettes kill. I don't understand why these people are listened to. Dawn Stover has an article about the new tactic: http://ow.ly/yKuXH (I work for the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, where this article is posted).

I'm a liberal and and climate weather enthusiast... I've have been interested in climate since i was a little kid... I know the science of climate change..or the supposed theories..I also completely understand the greenhouse effect..I can tell you why humans haven't created a change in the climate and won't in the foreseeable future.if you want...really ..I know what im talking about and I have no hidden agenda

No, thanks. Every time I discuss this with someone who claims to be liberal and to really like and understand science I end up frustrated because they really are none of those things, and they just trot out different versions of the same bogus "science" that deniers have been trotting out for years. The science is there, there's near universal consensus, and there will always be a few people who just love to be contrary.

I doubt that very much. You can read just about any real science site and get the information; it's a known fact that 97% of climate scientists globally agree.

that was 97% of a panel that was made up of professionals like engineers and doctors. .a lot of them weren't even scientists...that was an invited panel that was paid to sign a paper...it's not even a minute fraction of all the elite scientists in the world..you know this right? i hope you didn't think that was 97% of all scientists in the world...the man that is considered the best climatologist in the country..who is at MIT...outwardly dismisses the theory...but he already made his name..so he could afford to speak out

this was the 97% number the ipcc put together by their hand picked panel

None of what you just wrote is true; it's just regurgitated denier talking points. The 97% refers to scientists who study climate change; it is made up of many disciplines, of course it is, how could it not be? But of scientists who actually study the issue, from whatever discipline, 97% agree both on the warming and on the cause:

"In the scientific field of climate studies – which is informed by many different disciplines – the consensus is demonstrated by the number of scientists who have stopped arguing about what is causing climate change – and that's nearly all of them. A survey of 928 peer-reviewed abstracts on the subject 'global climate change' published between 1993 and 2003 shows that not a single paper rejected the consensus position that global warming is man caused (Oreskes 2004).

A follow-up study by the Skeptical Science team of over 12,000 peer-reviewed abstracts on the subjects of 'global warming' and 'global climate change' published between 1991 and 2011 found that of the papers taking a position on the cause of global warming, over 97% agreed that humans are causing it (Cook 2013). The scientific authors of the papers were also contacted and asked to rate their own papers, and again over 97% whose papers took a position on the cause said humans are causing global warming."

you can't hand pick your specialists to form a consensus..this is what they did. they paid the specialists...if you have evidence that it was random and not pre screened specialists....please..my mind is open

you realize the 3% that wouldn't sign were compromising their entire career?

Oh what nonsense. Sign up for what? You clearly have no idea of how scientists actually do their work. You need to stop pretending to be open-minded. You have no idea what you are talking about. The information is out there, read it, learn how science works.

sign the paper that says the agree with whatever the ipcc said they agreed on...the ipcc doesn't practice science..i know how science works..if you can't give me info on how that panel wasn't pre screened....well maybe we can discuss the science and not these skewed consensus...question...would you rather there be a doomsday scenario of human caused global warming coming in the next 40 years or not? Do you base your opinion solely on science or does political ideology your friends outdoor enthusiasm...feelings..or anything else have to do with it....there is no plus side for me telling the truth as i researched as most people just read the new york times and believe what they read or what they see on cnn....it's not fun for me to have this stance....but i have researched this extensively and i have common sense

Apparently not. Science does not work by signing papers. If you believe so, you need to study more.

would you rather there be a doomsday scenario of human caused global warming coming in the next 40 years or not?

Very few people want that. Of course it could be nice for us if the science is wrong and the truth belongs to a random "climate weather enthusiast" on a web forum. To tell the truth I would be very happy if you were right. But nothing points in that direction..

I'm also a liberal and I haven't the faintest idea what a "climate weather enthusiast" might be. I am concerned that we're screwing the climate royally and that my children and their children and their children are all going to pay the price for our shortsighted greed and irresponsible laziness.

I would very much like to hear why you believe humans haven't created a change in the climate.
