David Melgueiro, a Portuguese sea Captain, sailed from a port in Japan across the Arctic Sea to Portugal in 1660. This was during the Little Ice Age. So the extent of the Arctic ice pack is not variable from warming alone.

I can't find it now but in one group someone posing as a scientist countered my arguements that the nuclear submarine Skate surfaced in open water by saying that the year before this event, it was very cold at the north pole. Surely you would see a certain disparity between his claims that the record of the US Navy and not my opinion.
